TTfT 0734. Items that were used for a Mitzvah may be discarded. Items that were used for holiness need to be “hidden”.

The following are examples of items used for a mitzvah: Succah, Lulav, Shofar, Tzitzis.

The following are examples of items that were used for holiness: The cover of a sefer, Teffilin, Mezuzos, the wrapping of a sefer, the bag of Teffilin and their straps.

 

Rovah taught, “A Sefer Torah that is used [and can no longer be repaired] is “hidden” with a Torah scholar [upon his burial].

“You shall place it in an earthenware vessel so that it should last for many days.”
