Amoroim is the name given to the Talmudic Scholars which followed the period of the Mishnah.

Seder Hadoros (3,979) explains that the word means “To explain”. These scholars viewed the Mishna which preceded them as binding law, and an accurate picture of Judaism. They saw themselves as having the role of explaining, comparing, and clarifying. The record of their teachings is The Talmud.
