I am not sure of what benching means, I have heard it mentioned this past week or so. Is it sitting or is it speaking if neither, what is it??

It’s saying the prayers after eating a meal.
Not sure about the literal translation though.

“Bentching,” is a common slang term for Birchas Hamazon, or Grace After Meals. Thank you Brenda for pitching in here!
On a personal note: One of our favorite Shabbos hospitality stories is with a young lady who joined us (The Rhines) for Shabbos meal, and at the end, she heard us say, “Now, Let’s Bentch.” She had never heard the expression, so she thought that- as far fetched as it seemed- maybe we did bench pressing exercises after such a hearty meal. She has since become a dear friend of the family, with a family of her own. But the story is a favorite of hers. Best!

Benching is Yiddish for Bless. “Bench Luvunah” means bless the moon. “Bench Bircat ha’mazon” is “blessing of the food” or grace after meals. etc.
